TACHS
Test for Admissions into Catholic High Schools of
the Archdiocese of New York
The Program in Brief
The Test for Admissions into Catholic High Schools,
(TACHS), is sponsored by the Superintendent of Schools and the
participating high schools which this year number forty-seven. The
program is run cooperatively with the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens.
The Examination for
September 2008 admission will be
administered in selected centers in the Archdiocese on Friday, November
9,
2007. Pupils wishing to take the TACHS must register in advance.
Beginning Wednesday September 13, 2006, Internet registration will be
available via
www.tachsinfo.com. Telephone registration will also be accessible at
1.866.61TACHS. Paper registration forms will be available beginning the
week of August 30, 2007 at Catholic elementary schools and participating
high schools.
The Examination has been developed with the advice
and approval of the diocesan representatives. The TACHS measures academic
achievement in reading, language arts, and mathematics; and it will access
general reasoning skills.
The TACHS contains tests measuring both achievement
and ability. There will be a Reading section that will be broken into two
parts, Vocabulary and Comprehension. The Math sections will test both
Concepts/Problem-Solving and Estimation. The Ability test will assess
general abstract reasoning ability. Each section will be 30 minutes,
except for Math that will be 25 minutes, for a total testing time of 1
hour and fifty-five minutes.
Student Handbooks will provide a full description of
the examination and contain sample items will be distributed to Catholic
high schools, Catholic elementary schools, public, private and
non-diocesan schools, and Religious education offices. The Student
