The Guidance Department advises on numerous topics including transitional concerns, time management, study skills, college and career exploration. Additionally there is a part-time ADAPP counselor who counsels students regarding personal matter.

 

Academic Advising
 
• Address academic and career issues.
• Advise course selection process.
• Prepare for college entrance exams (PSAT/SAT/ACT/SAT Subject Tests).
• Test taking strategies.
• Manage college application process.
• Track school and New York State Regents graduation requirements.
• Develop letters of recommendation for job, college, and scholarship applications.
• Promote academic achievement.
• Coordinate parent-teacher conferences.

Evening Workshops for Parents- Senior Parent Night, Financial Aid Workshops, Annual College Fair, (over 40 Colleges attend as well as Financial Aid Advisors) Junior Parent Night, Freshman Parent Orientation and ADAPP Presentation for parents.

Additional Guidance Services

Testing Accommodations: Students with a current 504/IEP Plans from their home school district are eligible for testing accommodations. The parents are responsible to provide the school with the current 504/ IEP. Consult with your guidance counselor.

Referrals: Guidance personnel will consult with and refer student/parents to local health professionals at the request of the family or school.

Archdiocese Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program (ADAPP): Individual and small group sessions focused on the prevention of alcohol and drug use. Works in conjunction with parents and faculty to promote student success.

• Get to know your school counselor, faculty and other school resources.

• Take classes designed to promote academic achievement. Become involved in school or community based extracurricular activities that interest you and/or enable you to explore career interests.

• Career exploration.

• Review your transcript and 4 year plan.

• Prepare for and take the PSAT in October.

Consult with your counselor if you are interested in volunteer opportunities

   
11 grade 12 grade

• Prepare for and take the PSAT in October (The National Merit Scholarship program requires a Junior Year score).

• Attend SHHS College fair.

• Review school transcript.

• Meet with your counselor to discuss post-secondary plans.

• Register for ACT, SAT and SAT Subject Tests in the Spring.

• File NCAA paperwork.

• Participate in college visits.

• College Planning meetings.

• Review graduation status.

• Attend SHHS College fair.

• Complete college applications.

• Begin scholarship searches.

• Register for ACT, SAT, and Sat Subject Test in the Fall

. • Request teacher recommendations.

• Complete college essay and resume.

• Listen for scholarship announcements.

• Complete and file financial aid forms in January.
